Theme Parks
Disney and Universal are the standard bearers, but the 1960s and 70s were the golden age of regional theme parks in America. Inspired by Disneyland, everybody wanted a taste of Walt’s Magic Kingdom in their own backyard. After a few false starts, things finally got going with the opening of Six Flags Over Texas, followed up by parks all over the country.
Along with the books we’re producing that celebrate and document the rich history of these magical playgrounds, we’ve created a separate site called America’s Disneylands, dedicated to preserving the rich history of regional theme parks. There you will find lots of articles, books, podcast episodes, and so-very-cool vintage souvenir maps.
